At the annual meeting of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in Frankfurt from 28 February to 1 March 2025, Emma Terho was elected to the Executive Board of the EOC for a four-year term. The board position is a key place to influence European sports policy. Terho is the first Finn in the position.
In her campaign work, Terho emphasized cooperation between the European National Olympic Committees, strengthening the EOC’s events, and listening to athletes and involving them in decision-making.
– The EOC is not just one organisation. It is an organisation representing 49 European National Olympic Committees (NOCs). Cooperation can only be done by listening to the voice and needs of the NOCs. EOC events such as the European Games and the Youth Olympic Festivals (EYOF) are important competitions especially for young athletes. Athletes must be at the heart of everything we do. I am grateful that I can continue my work at the European level as well, emphasized Terho, whose term at the International Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission ends to the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
Terho got strong support across Europe.
– As the elections shows, Emma is trusted and her work as the Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Committee is highly valued. Now, there is plenty to do at the European level as well. While global politics is taking on new shapes and forms, the effects also extend to sports. It is important that Finland is involved in the most important tables where decisions regarding the European sports are made, states the Finnish Olympic Committee President, Petteri Kilpinen.
President of the EOC, the Greek Spyros Capralos continues as the EOC President for his second term 2025-2028. The board has 12 representatives.
